Shikha Mainbattikato (Candle’s Wick) is a film rendition of a very popular poem by a legendary Nepali poet- Bhupi Sherchan. In his poem “Mainbattiko Shikha”, Sherchan has an almost romantic representation of various biological and social stages in a Woman’s Life comparing her state to “शुभ्र, शान्त, स्निग्ध, शिखा मैनबत्तीको”- Loosely translated as Radiant, Peaceful, and Glossy- a Candle’s Wick.
The poet (a man) writes about the most intimate times of a woman – her first period, childbirth, and her widowed stage. He does this from a distance, admiring her, and making assumptions using words- like मानौं (Suppose) & झैं (like). This short film is based on the same poem but is made by women and inevitably the imagery comes out a little different. The film is not as pleasant as the poem but a lot closer to reality.
